TURKEY AND TINSEL – SCOTLAND – 6TH.NOV. TO 11TH NOV. 2009

I can well remember when we first advertised this break, way back in January.  We thought it would never happen.  However, on the 6th November all 58 of us boarded our spot on time, Highland Heritage Coach with our Driver Paul and off we set for Scotland.  What could you say about the weather on the way, it absolutely tipped down.  We stopped at Gretna Green for our lunch but no one got married!!  We arrived at the Hotel, just after 5pm.  They were well organised and soon we were in our room.  The next few days proved to be non stop – coach trips, eating, drinking, shopping, dancing, singing and chatting and yes we fitted some sleep in.  The weather bucked up  and we experienced ”luvly” sunshine with snow on the mountains and a winter wonderland, with sparkling frosty trees and grass.  The most beautiful still reflections in the lochs as there was not the slightest breeze.  Our intrepid members were good sports, joining in the fun of the Hotel’s fancy dress. Marge Grundy won first prize wih her Sky at Night outfit and Maureen Collier/Pat Mortimer were third as Fallen Angels (brilliant)  This out of a total of 28 entries – didn’t we do well?  Our Driver Paul – who also acted as Courier, was a fountain of knowledge and we all learned something, indeed a lot, about Scottish history even some shaggy dog stories or fishy ones anyway!!   All too soon, our break was over and we made the same journey home – this time in glorious sunshine.

Here are some pictures of our partying and fancy dress winners:

Ancient Maghull Chapel

Visit to Maghull ancient Chapel 19 November
About 15 members listened to an excellent talk this tiny building just behind St Anndrews Church, it was given by Eileen Kermonde Chapel trustee and historian and she outlined the history and architecture of the buildings which we all found fascinating. This was followed by a visit to Melling to look at the site of a similar building in St. Thomas’s churchyard and refreshment at the Bootle Arms!
