National Memorial Arboretum and Lichfield Wed.20th April 2011

On a beautiful warm sunny day we set off for the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The Arboretum was established in l997  by the Royal British Legion as a tribute to all who have lost their lives in war and terrorist activity.  Over 50,000 trees were planted which are now reaching maturity and the blossom trees were at their best.   160 memorials are erected around the splendid site and  the most stunning is the Armed Services Memorial which contains l6,000 names with a further 110 currently being inscribed for all who lost their lives in Afghanistan during 2010.  There are many civilian memorials as well.  After lunch most of our members travelled into the lovely historic City of Lichfield and visited the splendid cathedral with its’ 3 spires.  The Cathedral was being prepared for a feast and the ceremony of washing of the feet for Holy Week.  We spoke to several very interesting veterans – one of 94 who had fought at Tobruk and one was an Ambulance Driver on front line service and has recently written a book.  All in all it was a very interesting but very poignant day.
