We’re meeting for this walk at the Port Sunlight Heritage Centre to look at this lovely “industrial” planned village on the Wirral created by soap manufacturer William H Lever (later Lord Leverhulme). The village was acclaimed from the first as exemplifying the best in English town planning and house design. It was a great influence on subsequent industrial villages such as Bourneville , the garden city movement esp Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City and the design of early council/housing trust estates.
We set off for Clitheroe Interchange to meet with our guide for the day - Mr.Simon Entwistle of Top Hat Tours. Simon is a well known authority on this area and does many guest television and radio appearances. He is also a recognised expert on the Pendle Witches Trail and runs haunted ghost walks later in the year. We visited lots of ancient, beautiful villages – some with no television aerials or satellite discs, which are used again and again by television and film companies. We listened to all the tales there were to tell, saw the most beautiful scenic part of the valley. You would probably find the scenery hard to match anywhere else in the country and all virtually on our doorstep. We saw celebrity houses including Penelope Keith, Janice Battersby of Coronation Street and the Wing’s Drummer – all very desirable, we even encountered Sue Barker, who gave us a cheery wave, in her car waiting to pass our coach. Simon was informative, interesting and humourous. In spite of a dire weather prediction the night before, it proved to be completely wrong and we enjoyed good weather all day.
The creative writing group is having a rest until October. When we start again we intend to focus on people who want to write something about themselves. This sounds very introspective and self centred. However people may wish to write about themselves for several reasons. Most have interesting incidents or episodes in their lives and it is good to share these. If you have family then you may want to share these events with your family. Maybe some wish to write up the history of their family. There are many reasons why we may want to share our past experiences. With some guidance we may be assisted to present these events in a way which will make easy reading and thus make them more memorable for the reader.
Keep your eye open for more news of this and if you are interested contact Arthur Hughes or any committee member.
