Poem by Bill Potter

N I G H T

A difficult subject about which to write,

To record my thoughts, I need a light

Of dawn, or man made source, bright.

So. Down with the switch to bring it on,

Jobs domestic have been done,

To hand pen, paper for words may flow.

Night?  It comes from or goes, I do not know.

Something called dusk began the event

No stars or bright moon as yet, to consent,

For darkness has no depth as yet.

Where night comes from or goes, if such is relevant

Science surely knows.

I’ve heard it said; it hides behind the moon

Creeping around the heavens of afternoon,

Until just before the dusk.

Then, shadows slowly cross my world,

show how darkness unfolds, as it must.

Crossing my path, I try a dance upon its edge,

Futile steps of rhythm in time and space,

Is difficult for my brain to embrace.

Night has left me now, and gone elsewhere

As dawn breaks through.

I stand and star.   In disbelief, for relief

I close my eyes, and my night is light

Full of flowers and scenes of delight, a puzzle for one not bright.

So. I leave to others to tell the why and wherefore

Of  NIGHT. For me it remains a difficult write.

Riveting drama at Melling Tithebarn

The Last Ballade

The story of Frederick Chopin and George Sand: a play with music by Michael Lunts

On Friday 18th November 7:30pm Melling Tithebarn Arts Association welcomes Michael Lunts who will present the dramatic story of Frederick Chopin and George Sand. This will be a play with music performed by Michael. Chopin’s music provides the background to a riveting drama about the composer’s tempestuous affair with novelist George Sand.  The Last Ballade offers audiences a dramatic insight, through the eyes of Chopin himself, into this extraordinary woman who has been variously described as both his muse and his “vampire”.
Many of the pieces that Sand inspired, including the beautiful Berceuse, the famous Minute Waltz, and the F minor Ballade, are played live as part of the action as Michael Lunts portrays both Chopin the man, and Chopin the musician in this unique fusion of drama and live music.

Admission £7 includes refreshments. Tickets available on the door but reservation is recommended. Phone 526 4992 or 531 8772.

Discussion Group to debate EU

This friendly and not too serious group, led by Brian Leach, got off to a good start recently at Melling Tithebarn when over 20 members attended  to discuss whether or not television is taking over our lives. Ably chaired by Bert Dowell, a lively discussion ensued, before everyone went home to watch TV!
The next Meeting will debate ‘The EU – In or Out?’
Preceded by refreshments, this will take place on Thursday November 17th at 13:30-15:00, again at Melling Tithebarn. This is a great new venue for U3A which we think will be a popular one for other activities.
Speaking for the motion will be Geoff Kean and against Tony Atlay. Geoff and Tony will give short introductory statements and summings-up. Members will be invited to participate by giving their own opinions. before the motion is voted on.
Come along and be informed, inspired and challenged to decide.
Enquiries and more information about this new group from Brian Leach Tel. 0151 531 8928
