20+members visited Sefton Parish Church on 10th December and enjoyed an entertaining afternoon listening to Churchwarden Major Gordon Corbett outlining the history and development of this lovely church. The Major lead a guided tour around the building enthusing about tombs, brasses, hatchments, screens, memorials dog whipper’s and mayor’s pews. It doesn’t sound like fun, but it was!!
The impressive collection of awards won by the Maghull Station Volunteers, for their work in transforming our local railway station are captured above.
Led by Nigel Winchester, Chairman of the Volunteers, the group, who are predominantly U3A members, have won a total of five awards for their work this year, the most recent at the Royal Horticultural Society’s North West in Bloom Awards evening, held at the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre.
Nigel says “This has been a wonderful year for the group, and the awards are a tribute to the work the volunteers do. However, the main thing is that we can all now be proud of Maghull station.”
Their latest success came after the RHS judges visited Maghull station recently and saw the work the volunteers have carried out landscaping the area, planting out flowerbeds, hanging baskets and troughs and in general environmental maintenance. They were so impressed, they awarded the station an “Outstanding” Certificate, the highest level available. However, there was a further surprise in store for the volunteers at the North West in Bloom Awards presentation when it was announced they had also been awarded the City of Liverpool Trophy for the best Large Neighbourhood Award, North West in Bloom, 2009.
Well done volunteers! If you would like to be involved in the the ongoing work, contact Nigel on 526 4537.
