Year of the Tiger

2010 YEAR OF THE TIGER—metal—yin

Sheila merry, Tai Chi leader writes:

According to tales and legend Chinese New Year starts with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nien. Nien would come on the first day of the New Year to devour livestock, crops and villagers, especially children. To protect themselves the villagers would put out food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. They believed that when the Nien ate the food it wouldn’t attack any more people. They thought the Nien was scared of red so they hung lanterns and spring scrolls on windows and doors. They used firecrackers to frighten the Nien away. From then on the Nien never came to the village again. It was eventually captured by Hongjun Laozu an ancient Taoist monk. It became Hongjun Laozu’s mount.

The celebrations are over 15 days:

1 Abstain from eating meat for longevity. Visit the oldest members of the family.

2. Married daughters visit their parents. Pray to the ancestors.

3/4 Not considered good days to visit.

5. Eat dumplings, businesses reopen.

7. Considered to be your birthday. East raw fish salad.

8. Birthday of Jade Emperor, everyone returns to work.

9/10. Pray to Jade Emperor.

13. Eat vegetarian food.

15. Eat rice dumplings, light candles by door. Lantern festival.

People born in the Year of the Tiger are said to be natural born leaders and symbolise power, passion and daring.

2010 is predicted to be a tumultuous year, but the tiger’s influence will offer courage while inviting bold actions and risk taking. The metal element will provide steely resolve, fortitude and determination to accomplish goals.
