REPLACEMENT TRIP THURS.5TH AUGUST 2010

I have now organised a trip to replace the Bashall Barn/Hoghton Towers trip as follows.  I hope this cancellation did not cause too much disappointment or inconvenience.

Thursday 5th August 2010 – A visit to Llandudno has been arranged.  This is the largest resort in Wales and still maintains its Victorian charm but has everything to offer to to-day’s visitor.  Set between the Gt. and Little Orme Headlands it has an attractive Esplanade, Victorian Pier, one of the longest ever bult, with attractions, tram ride up the Gt.Orme where you can relax with a drink or a bite to eat while enjoying spectacular views.  There is excellent shopping in Mostyn Street, with both old shops and a newer complex, maybe enjoy a boat trip round the bay or the Cable Car from Happy Valley – you may even be tempted to paddle on its’ Blue Award beach. Whatever you are looking for I’m sure you’ll find it here. The trip will depart from Central Sq., Maghull at 9.l5am and Return at 6pm.  Price  £ll

Field trip – Digital Cameras

As our next competition is on Liverpool Architecture, we thought it would be a good idea to have a field trip to Liverpool on Wednesday 13th or Thursday 14th May and have a look at the wonderful buildings in the City?.

We are looking at involving our Architectural Group Leaders for some help and advice.

OSWESTRY/CHIRK CASTLE

We set off for Oswestry in lovely sunshine, but still with that chilly wind.  We had instructions to divide into 3 groups for the guided walk and to order tea/coffee so that it would be ready for us when we got there.  We did and it was – but you can imagine the confusion on board that coach!!!   We had coffee in a 600 year old building, full of character and then we set off in our appropriate groups with our 3 guides.  Oswestry is an interesting border town, brought to life by the guides, but to a degree it has ben spoilt by vaiour regimes over the centuries.  By this time, the sun had gone in and it was quite chilly.  The sign outside an olde worlde pub – real fire, was a big draw.  After lunch we visited the 700 year old Chirk Castle.  The daffodils in the gardens were quite spectacular.  There is a lot of conservation work currently being undertaken here.  Cleaning of pictures, carpets, curtains and a lot of repair work – only to be expected after 700 years I suppose.  A lot of young people were involved in this restoration work and you could visibly see the line where they had cleaned – the dust deposits were incredible.  The Castle has to be vacuumed and dusted every morning with special equipment - it is done in the morning because dust has settled overnight and it is easier to collect without damaging surfaces.  Once again a big draw was the huge log fire in the Servants’ Quarters where we had a warm.  Our visit has been put on the Oswestry Tourist Board Website together with a couple of photos.   One of the Guides was a member of the Oswestry U3A

Ist December 2010 Gardening group Christmas meal at Dog and Partridge Chipping also calling at Barton Grange garden centre for morning coffee cost £23.50 now taking bookings Tuesday mornings at Gardening table.
